[ COURSE DESCRIPTION ]
Learning Media Methods [05-292] is a Spring 4 HCII mini-course offered for the IDeATE Learning Media concentration and HCII minor, and is open to all students. This hybrid seminar-studio course brings together students from across the disciplines to consider the design of mediated learning experiences through a project-based design inquiry process. Students will be introduced to a range learning theory frameworks and design research methods that explore the cognitive, social and affective dimensions of learning in everyday contexts through readings, invited lectures, in-class activities and out-of-class assignments. We will conduct a series of short design research studies to define learning goals and develop supporting design concepts aimed at improving learning outcomes for diverse participants in an informal learning setting (e.g. museum, after school program, maker space or mobile application). In concept development, we will look at how to position technology and question its role in the setting to engage and foster positive learning interactions. The course will culminate in a media-rich presentation of design concepts to a stakeholder audience, and include a supporting evaluation plan describing how learning outcomes for the project would be assessed.

This semester we will be working with the Carnegie Museum of Natural History to explore the design of learning experiences for We are Nature: Welcome to the Anthropocene exhibition opening this coming Fall as the topic area for our research inquiry and project work. The course will focus on formative and front-end learning design research methods to support exhibit concept development and the evaluation of climate change related learning experiences.
In this course you will learn to…
